Much of Ryuu's personality comes from the influences of his father and his grandfather over the years, as well as those who have been close to him all his life. Ryuu is loyal, but is willing to tell somebody how it is. Loyalty to a fault sometimes does more harm than good, sometimes and he knows that something, a person is wrong and may need some guidance. Not to say he doesn't need his own guidance at times, however. An empathetic nature leads him to be able to offer his own advice to others, although he doesn't take criticism as well as he offers it because of his own strong-will and how determined he is to solve problems without involving anybody else. Nobody else needs to get hurt, right? He wouldn't want something to happen to somebody he cared about because he couldn't do something on his own, as well as his prideful nature not wanting him to accept help. One could almost say that Ryuu cares too much and can be considered highly protective, like that of a loyal guard dog or sometimes even over protective if it comes to somebody he really loves. It's sometimes hard to forget how intelligent Ryuu is when one looks at his mother and then his grandfather and without how he acts sometimes. Although, his intelligence is more geared towards mathematics, the sciences, as well as medical knowledge. Ryuu also tends to be the "voice of reason" to people, but he's very rarely listened to when it comes to certain things. He's more likely to just go along for the ride and make sure nobody does anything stupid enough to warrant them getting killed. He's more of a "let's not and say we did," kind of person when it comes to other people doing stupid things. It's okay if he does it, though.

Ryuu has been raised as a slightly spoiled child, so there are very few humble bones in his body. He takes a lot of pride in everything he does; his swordsmanship and his knowledge as a doctor. There are few who can say that they are better than him with a sword and he is considered the heir to the Shigure Soen Ryu style of his grandfather, who personally taught him after his own passed away. Ryuu has a problem with sharing and is highly possessive of things that he has deemed his own, such as his girlfriend. While he would never do anything outside of being overly jealous, he is known to turn into a sulky child over certain matters, but cares too much about people to do anything otherwise. Of course, while Ryuu is highly intelligent he does seem to take after his mother and his grandfather in some sense because he can be rather dense and air-headed about things sometimes. He's book smart, but doesn't always get the finer things in life. Some things just fly right over his head, much to the amusement of others. Ryuu's pride often leads him to butt heads with others in a disobedient manner, but it usually easily remedied by earning his respect in some manner. He doesn't much care for those who outright demand it without first earning it. Ryuu doesn't always know how to handle people sometimes and is more apt to being awkward when he doesn't.

Ryuu was raised by the sword, learning how to use the weapon practically since he could hold one and walk around. His mother was a great teacher for most of his life, teaching him what she had learned from her father. He was raised in and around the mafia and the other grandchildren of the famous guardians of Tsunayoshi Sawada. While his mother was prone to wandering off and even forgetting him, sometimes...it was his father who was the responsible one of his parents - Gokudera and his oldest granddaughter was also somewhat responsible for the boy, while his grandfather sort of laughed off his daughter's forgetful tendencies. It is to be noted that due to his mother's forgetful tendencies(resulting from both Yamamoto and Tsunayoshi dropping her on her head as a baby) that he was often the most targeted by enemies of the Vongola.
Ryuu was seven when his father died in one of the many conflicts that happened between the Vongola and their enemies. He died guarding the rear of the injured who were retreating, including his wife, while already being injured himself. His father hadn't been one of the Vongola Guardians, that was his mother's position, but he was given the send-off of one. It was the loss of his father who died protecting the injured that drove Ryuu to become a doctor and throw himself even more into the blade. He could be on the front lines, fighting to protect the ones he cared about as well as helping those who needed him right away. They wouldn't have to wait for the doctors to arrive, or for the danger to be over.
The loss of Ryuu's father caused his mother to retire from being the Rain Guardian, not only from the grief of losing her husband, but from the fact that she had miscarried a child she hadn't known she was pregnant with because of her injuries and the resulting stress that the grief had brought on. Having never remarried, or having another child, Ryuu's mother put her entire being into training Ryuu alongside his grandfather, who had stepped in place of his father. The addition to a master of the art also led him to be taught by others close to Yamamoto, including Squalo of the Varia and Genkishi of the Spiaggia, or Giglio Nero, as they were once known as. It was these additions to his trainers that not only helped him cope with his father's death but also taught him the various sword styles besides just his grandfather's Shigure Soen Ryu style of fighting.
Comparatively to his mother and grandfather, who enjoyed sports - especially baseball and softball, Ryuu always preferred the sciences during high school because medicine had a high rate of science and math in it. His want to be a doctor and attend medical school lead him to excel in both high school and then later on, college. It also didn't help that his best friend and future wife, and her grandfather, were also quite intelligent and willing to help with Ryuu's studies over the years. Gokudera was proud that at least somebody outside his own flesh and blood shared a love for education and brains. With their help, Ryuu not only graduated high school early and at the top of the class, but also lead him to finish medical school early as well. Well, the medical part of that was from Gokudera's ties to a certain Dr. Shamal, who after much moaning and groaning that Ryuu wasn't a pretty girl - although he got a date from Ryuu's mother out of it - he complied and also offered his aid during Ryuu's education.
Considering Ryuu's heritage and skills, and his general attitude, it was almost a given that Ryuu would be named the next Guardian of Rain for the Vongola. Although, that still didn't change how proud his mother, grandfather, and even Silvia's grandfather from being proud of the both of them for becoming the Rain and Storm Guardian, respectively. He doesn't really care which one of the Sawada's takes over as Vongola boss, they just have to earn his respect, and keep the Vongola as strong as ever.
Ryuu is six foot three inches tall. He is sometimes embarrassed to admit that his mother, part of her training, was having him take ballet lessons(and a little bit of ballroom dancing, for those special Vongola occasions.) He also has extensive knowledge of the human body, of the nerves, muscles, and pressure points of the body from his years in medical school. He gives a great massage because of it.
He and Silvia Fausti are currently engaged to be married, much to the absolute glee of his mother, and his grandfather. His grandfather hopes to live long enough to see his great grandchildren and he may get that wish, considering Ryuu and Silvia currently being engaged.
Ryuu has won many kendo tournaments throughout his career as well as learning several different schools of kendo and other sword styles. He specializes in the Shigure Soen Ryu style, like his mother and grandfather, but uses dual katana when fighting usually and thus has had to make edits to the sword style itself to match his usage of dual katana blades.
